Blueberries
Blueberries have anti-atherosclerosis effect and it can also prevent Alzheimer's, female diseases, the prevention of visual defects, to promote cardiovascular health etc. The effectiveness of blueberries is such that senior citizens and women should eat more.
The most well-known effect of blueberries are - to maintain eye health, the prevention of visual impairment, just as the British Royal Air Force pilots do by eating blueberries to improve their vision. The reason blueberries can improve visual acuity lies in the retina of the eye with a substance called rhodopsin (rhodopsin; visual purple). This substance is present in the retina of the eye pigment, produced by the vitamin A and rhodopsin protein (opsin). It will break down by light stimulus, but after a cycle, it will synthesise again. This decomposition and re-synthesis is controlled by the visual field of brain. The anthocyanin in blueberries makes rhodopsin synthesise, making it more active and thus, improving vision.
In addition to increase the vitality of eyes, but blueberry also inhibits the role of reactive oxygen and it also contains substance which can kill bacteria (such as infection of E. coli, etc.) and viruses. It is used in Europe as an antidiarrheal drugs and for as a cold medicine. Canadian researchers discovered that it can kill off poliovirus 100% within 24 hours. In laboratary test on mice, it is also found that blueberries can promote mental strength and it will improve intelligence.
